China food scandal hits McDonald's, KFC

An American-owned meat factory, Shanghai Husi Food, a subsidiary of Illinois-based OSI Group operating in China has been accused of selling out-of-date and tainted meat to clients including McDonald's, Starbucks and Yum Brands, which owns the KFC and Pizza Hut chains.

Local broadcaster Dragon TV aired footage Monday that showed workers using their bare hands at the food plant to process expired meat, and even food that had fallen on the floor.

Both McDonald’s and Yum have apologized to customers and ordered their outlets to stop serving products from the Shanghai supplier. McDonald’s has some 2,000 restaurants in China, while Yum has more than 4,600 KFC outlets in over 950 cities, and 1,100 Pizza Hut restaurants in about 300 cities.
