Israeli artillery fired on U.N. School in Gaza

JEBALIYA REFUGEE CAMP, Gaza Strip—Israeli artillery hit a United Nations school sheltering more than 3,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip early Wednesday, U.N. officials said, and at least 15 were reported killed and wounding 90—the second fatal attack on a shelter during Israel's 3-week offensive against Hamas.

Abu Hasna, the U.N. agency spokesman, said the international community must step in. "It's the responsibility of the world to tell us what we shall do with more than 200,000 people who are inside our schools, thinking that the U.N. flag will protect them," he said. "This incident today proves that no place is safe in Gaza."

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said it told Israel "17 times" the building was being used by refugees, although it also confirmed other schools had been used to store weapons.
